Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
